Natural reserve area - the “Russkiy Sever” (the Russian North) National Park, as envisioned by its creators, should serve to preserve the unique natural habitats of the Vologodskoe Poozerie (the Vologda Lakes) and the rich historical and cultural heritage of the region. Today, the national park attracts thousands of tourists who want to be wrapped up in the nature of the Russian North and its historical sites.
Today, on the territory of the “Russkiy Sever” (the Russian North) National Park, there is a unique historical and cultural complex, comprising of ancient migration and trade routes with a great variety of archaeological sites and historical villages lying along them, monastery centers, that made indispensable contribution to the history, culture and intellectual development of Russia, numerous monuments of civil and church architecture, ethnography of engineering thought. Many monuments are surrounded by natural environment, comprising integrity with nature and the historical environment. There are invaluable monuments of Russian architecture: Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery (now the museum reserve), Ferapontov Monastery (Dionisy's fresco museum), Goritsky Monastery, Nilo-Sorsky Monastery.
The territory of the national park is located within the main watershed between the basins of the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans. It is covered with lakes and small rivers - the tributaries of the Northern Dvina, Onega, Sheksna. In the southern part of the park there is the Cherepovets reservoir. Lakes are overrun with fish, in some rivers there are crayfish, which is indisputable proof of the water purity. On the territory of the national park there are more than 1000 species of higher plants, 200 species of bryophytes, 150 species of lichens. Plants belong to 84 families. The park lies on the northern distribution limit of oak, maple, linden, there are hazel and wild apple trees here. 60 species of plants growing in the park are very rare, 8 of them are listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation. In this area relict and very rare aquatic plants preserved. “Russkiy Sever” (the Russian North) National Park is a home place for unique viable populations of the orchid family plants (23 species). 269 species of vertebrate animals are fixed here: 29 species of fish, 6 amphibians, 6 reptiles, 178 species of birds and 50 species of mammals inhabit the park water bodies. White-tailed eagle and the osprey, listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation, have settled and successfully breed in the park within the recent years. About 110 species of fauna require special protection.
Since its creation and until nowadays the national park has had a great potential for the development of ecological and educational tourism. Its territory is marked with ecological paths, waterways and pedestrian tourist routes are developed here. It is a unique natural, historical and cultural system.
