Like Vologda, Cherepovets is located between two capitals – travelling from Moscow to Cherepovets by car will take 7 hours on the M-8 Kholmogory highway (the distance from Moscow to Cherepovets is 580 kilometers through Vologda or 450 kilometers through Rybinsk) or 7 hours from St. Petersburg (537 kilometers). There is an international airport of the Severstal Airline in the Cherepovets, as well as a big river port. The largest rivers are Sheksna and Yagorba.

The original works of the famous battle artist, Vasily Vereshchagin are exhibited in the Vereshchagin House-Museum. Fans of Russian rock must visit the Museum of Alexander Bashlachev — the memorial exposition holds copies of his articles, complete discography, books and personal belongings of the musician. The Literary Museum named after Igor Severyanin with exposition devoted to life and works of this outstanding poet is located in Vladimirovka village, where the poet faced the revolution.
On the bank of the Sheksna River, the Manor of the Galskoys was restored. It is an excellent example of provincial classicism, the only landowning estate in the Vologda region, where the majority of farm buildings preserved in their initial state.
Among must see places are the Galinskiye Parusa (Galician Sails) Interactive Museum in the Cherepovets district - a unique project of boat craftsman Sergei Tokarev, who makes various types of boats by his hands: from traditional dugouts to pomors Koch. Museum excursions take place in an interactive game form.

Cherepovets is the hometown of the Severstal hockey club, which plays in the Continental Hockey League. The team holds home matches in the Ice Palace arena. Every year in Cherepovets military history fans hold the " Stat’ Severa” (North Character) interregional military-patriotic festival, and fans of Russian rock gather at the "Vremya Kolokolchikov " (Time of Bells) Festival, in memory of Alexander Bashlachev.
